Rotavirus inner capsid protein VP6 is the major structural protein forming the intermediate layer of the rotavirus triple-layered capsid. It plays a central role in virion architecture, stability, and function, acting as a physical adaptor between the outer and inner layers of the virus. It is essential for viral mRNA transcription, and antibodies against VP6 can inhibit this process. It is also a major antigenic target, making it a potential target for vaccine development.
