Rotavirus is a non-enveloped, double-stranded RNA virus that causes severe gastroenteritis in humans. Its outer capsid contains spike-shaped VP4 proteins that protrude and bind to host cell surface glycans, initiating viral entry. VP7 is a glycoprotein that stabilizes the outer viral shell and is also a principal antibody target. Together, these components drive the specific binding and entry of rotavirus into host epithelial cells. Both VP4 and VP7 are targets for neutralizing antibodies, making them central to vaccine design. Host cell surface glycans act as receptors for virus attachment and define host specificity, species tropism, and pathogenicity.
