Overview

Routine vaccines are a cornerstone of global public health, aimed at achieving herd immunity and controlling the spread of pathogens like poliovirus, measles, and hepatitis (WHO, 2023). Because the term describes a clinical category of products rather than a single biochemical entity, it is not classified as a traditional pharmacological target.

Mechanism of action

Routine vaccines function by introducing specific antigens—such as weakened or killed pathogens, or pieces of proteins—to the host immune system to stimulate a primary immune response without causing the disease itself (WHO, 2023). This process leads to the production of neutralizing antibodies by B-cells and the generation of memory B and T-cells, which provide rapid and effective protection upon subsequent exposure to the actual pathogen (NIH, 2023).
