Royalactin (MRJP1)

Target
MRJP1
Molecular classification
Growth factor, Protein
01

Overview

Royalactin (also referred to as Major Royal Jelly Protein 1 or MRPJ1) is a ~57 kDa protein found predominantly in royal jelly secreted by worker bees. It promotes differentiation of bee larvae into queens rather than workers, increases body size and ovary development, and shortens developmental time for queen bees. Royalactin acts via the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling pathway and modulates Insulin/IGF and mTOR pathways. It is being investigated for potential roles as an anti-aging agent and for immunomodulatory properties related to cancer.

Mechanism of action

Acts via the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling pathway. Activates downstream effectors such as p70 S6 kinase and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). Influences juvenile hormone levels affecting ovary development.
