Overview

RPL38 pseudogene 1 (RPL38P1) is a non-coding genomic DNA sequence derived from retrotransposition of the RPL38 gene, which encodes the 60S ribosomal protein L38, a component of the large ribosomal subunit. This pseudogene has lost coding capacity and does not produce a functional protein. An unusual form of the RPL38 pseudogene is located in the promoter region of the type 1 angiotensin II receptor gene in humans[2][3]. Unlike the parental RPL38, which is involved in ribosome function and developmental regulation, the pseudogene RPL38P1 has no known biological function, disease association, or interaction with drugs, and it is not considered a therapeutic target[2][3]. Pseudogenes like RPL38P1 are typically transcriptionally silent and lack the ability to serve as molecular drug targets. The parent gene, RPL38, is essential for ribosome structure and protein synthesis, but the pseudogene itself does not contribute to these functions[2][3].
