Overview

RPL38 pseudogene 6 (RPL38P6) is a processed pseudogene derived from the RPL38 gene, which encodes 60S ribosomal protein L38. RPL38P6 does not produce a functional protein. Like many ribosomal protein genes, RPL38 has multiple dispersed processed pseudogenes throughout the human genome, generated by retrotransposition events. These pseudogenes, including RPL38P6, are generally considered non-coding genomic elements and do not contribute to normal ribosome function or protein synthesis. There are no known pharmaceutical agents, biomarkers, or disease associations specifically attributable to RPL38P6, nor is it included in curated therapeutic target databases. RPL38 (the parental gene) encodes a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit and plays a role in translation and development. Pseudogenes like RPL38P6 are ubiquitous for ribosomal protein genes but usually lack promoters, introns, or have disruptive mutations, rendering them non-functional. RPL38 pseudogenes may be annotated in genomic databases, but they are not druggable nor associated with disease phenotypes. There is nothing to suggest that RPL38P6 is anything other than a pseudogene, so it is not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or recognized therapeutic target, and should not be selected for downstream drug discovery or biological studies as a target.
