Overview

RPS27A pseudogene 1 (RPS27AP1) is a non-coding processed pseudogene that is a sequence homolog of the functional ribosomal protein S27a gene (RPS27A). Pseudogenes are copies of genes that have lost their protein-coding ability or are otherwise no longer expressed in the cell. RPS27AP1 shares sequence similarity with RPS27A but does not produce a functional protein. While the parental gene RPS27A encodes a ubiquitin–ribosomal protein fusion important for ribosome function and protein turnover, RPS27AP1 is not known to have any direct biological function, serve as a receptor, or be targeted by therapeutic agents. Presence of this and similar pseudogenes is common in the genome, and they may serve as genetic markers or be involved in gene regulation through non-coding RNA activity, but there is no evidence that RPS27AP1 serves a direct role in disease, therapy, or normal cellular activities.
