Overview

RPS3A pseudogene 11 (RPS3AP11) is a processed pseudogene derived from the ribosomal protein S3A gene (RPS3A). Like other ribosomal protein pseudogenes, it is a byproduct of gene duplication or retrotransposition in the genome and does not encode a functional ribosomal protein. Pseudogenes such as RPS3AP11 usually have high sequence similarity to their parent gene but contain disabling mutations that render them non-coding. RPS3AP11, like other ribosomal pseudogenes, is not known to have any biological or pathological functions and is not considered a therapeutic target. The functional RPS3A gene encodes a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit and participates in protein synthesis, but its pseudogenes, including RPS3AP11, are gene relics that do not produce functional proteins and have no established cellular roles. Pseudogenes are not targets for drugs or therapeutic interventions, nor are they considered biomarkers or associated with specific safety issues; they are largely genomic "fossils".
