RPS3A pseudogene 17 (RPS3AP17) is a processed pseudogene that shares sequence similarity with the ribosomal protein S3A (RPS3A), which is a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis. RPS3AP17 does not encode a functional protein. Pseudogenes such as this arise as duplication or retrotransposition events and are dispersed throughout the genome; they are typically considered nonfunctional fragments, although some pseudogenes may have regulatory effects at the RNA level on their parental genes. There is no evidence that RPS3AP17 has biological activity, disease association, or therapeutic relevance.
