It is one of at least 60 processed pseudogenes originating from the RPS3A gene dispersed throughout the human genome. Unlike the functional RPS3A protein—which is a structural component of the ribosomal 40S subunit essential for protein synthesis—RPS3AP51 does not encode a protein and does not contribute to ribosomal function or any biological processes.
