Overview

**rRNA-processing protein FCF1 homolog (FCF1)** is a highly conserved, essential component of the eukaryotic small ribosomal subunit (SSU) processome, a multi-protein complex involved in the earliest stages of ribosome assembly[1][4][7]. FCF1 (also known as UTP24 or Bka) functions as an endoribonuclease with a PIN (PilT N-terminus) domain, catalyzing precise endonucleolytic cleavage steps (notably at A1/A2 sites) in the pre-rRNA needed for the maturation of 18S rRNA and formation of the small ribosomal subunit[1][3][8]. Loss of FCF1 function impairs ribosome assembly, affecting protein synthesis and cellular proliferation[1]. FCF1 also interacts with small nucleolar RNAs (particularly U3 snoRNA) and other assembly factors within the nucleolus, orchestrating early stages of ribosome biogenesis[7].\n\nCurrently, FCF1 is not a known drug target, receptor, or therapeutic target, though disruptions in ribosome biogenesis are implicated in various cancers and bone marrow failure syndromes (ribosomopathies)[1][2].\n\nThere is no evidence of direct interacting drugs, known mechanisms of drug action, established clinical biomarkers, or safety concerns specifically associated with FCF1 at present.
