Overview

UTP23 is a nucleolar protein that is a structural component of the small subunit (SSU) processome, which mediates early steps in the biogenesis of the 40S ribosomal subunit. It contains a degenerate PIN domain and a unique CCHC-type Zn finger motif, but lacks canonical nuclease activity, functioning instead as a structural factor in ribosome assembly. UTP23 associates specifically with snR30 snoRNA and is required for early processing of 18S rRNA at key cleavage sites (A0, A1, A2). It is evolutionarily conserved, essential for proper cell growth and ribosome maturation, but not considered a druggable or clinical therapeutic target. While implicated in the pathology of colorectal adenocarcinoma, it is not a primary disease gene or biomarker in current medical use.
