Rubella virus (RuV) is the causative agent of rubella, a contagious viral infection. It is an enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus in the family Matonaviridae. Transmission occurs primarily via airborne droplets. While typically causing mild disease, rubella infection during early pregnancy can lead to severe birth defects in the fetus (Congenital Rubella Syndrome).
