Rubella virus antigens are the structural components of the Rubella virus, specifically the E1 and E2 envelope glycoproteins and the capsid (C) protein. These proteins are critical for viral entry into host cells, with E1 serving as the primary attachment and fusion protein and the main target for neutralizing antibodies (UniProt P08563; PubMed: 16199330). In clinical practice, these antigens are the basis for live-attenuated vaccines, such as the RA 27/3 strain, which induce robust humoral and cellular immune responses to prevent Rubella infection (CDC: Rubella). While Rubella is generally a mild self-limiting illness characterized by a rash and fever, infection during pregnancy can lead to Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS), resulting in severe birth defects or fetal death (StatPearls: Rubella). Consequently, these antigens are vital for both preventive vaccination programs and diagnostic testing, where they are used to detect IgM and IgG antibodies to confirm acute infection or immunity (NIH: Rubella).
