The Rubella virus E1 glycoprotein is a structural envelope protein and the principal antigenic determinant of the rubella virus, which causes German measles. It is essential for viral entry into host cells, mediating both receptor binding and membrane fusion functions. The E1 protein forms a heterodimer with another glycoprotein, E2, to create spike complexes on the virion surface. It is the main target of neutralizing antibodies.
