The Rubella virus structural polyprotein is a precursor protein that is proteolytically processed into three distinct structural components: the capsid protein (C) and two envelope glycoproteins (E1 and E2) (UniProt: P08563). The capsid protein is the primary internal structural protein, responsible for binding the viral RNA genome to form the nucleocapsid, while E1 and E2 facilitate viral entry and membrane fusion (PubMed: 16188213). Beyond its structural role, the capsid protein is known to interact with host cell mitochondria and modulate apoptotic pathways, which is critical for the virus's ability to establish infection and potentially persist in host tissues (PubMed: 11752710). Rubella virus is the causative agent of rubella (German measles), a disease that, while often mild in children, can cause devastating Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) if contracted during pregnancy (CDC). Therapeutic intervention primarily relies on the live-attenuated rubella vaccine, which induces a protective immune response targeting these structural proteins to prevent viral attachment and assembly (WHO).
