Overview

Ruminal pH is a critical physiological measure of the acidity or alkalinity within the rumen, the primary fermentation vat of ruminant animals. It represents the dynamic equilibrium between the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from carbohydrate fermentation and the buffering capacity provided by saliva and acid absorption through the ruminal epithelium (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2016). Optimal ruminal pH typically ranges from 6.0 to 7.0; however, high-grain diets can lead to a sustained drop below 5.5, a condition known as subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) (Enemark, 2008). SARA is characterized by microbial dysbiosis, impaired fiber digestion, and systemic inflammation, which can manifest as laminitis or liver abscesses in livestock. Management of ruminal pH is achieved through the administration of alkalizing agents like sodium bicarbonate or ionophores such as monensin, which selectively suppress lactate-producing bacteria to stabilize the internal environment (Callaway et al., 2003). As a non-molecular 'target,' ruminal pH serves as a central indicator for animal health and metabolic efficiency in veterinary medicine (Nagaraja & Lechtenberg, 2007).
