Overview

Ruminococcus is a polyphyletic genus of Gram-positive, strictly anaerobic, non-motile cocci within the phylum Firmicutes (class Clostridia)[1][2][3]. Members are best known for degrading plant cell wall polysaccharides such as cellulose and resistant starches. The genus is strictly associated with host intestinal tracts (mainly herbivores and omnivores, including humans) and is rarely found in the environment outside hosts[1]. Recent phylogenetic research has shown that the name "Ruminococcus" is problematic: what was classically grouped as one genus actually belongs to multiple distinct bacterial families (Ruminococcaceae and Lachnospiraceae), and several species formerly called Ruminococcus have been reclassified into other genera such as Blautia and Mediterraneibacter[1][2].
