Ruscogenin is a naturally occurring steroidal sapogenin primarily isolated from the rhizomes of Ruscus aculeatus (Butcher's broom) and the tubers of Ophiopogon japonicus. Recent research has also identified ruscogenin as an agonist for the Liver X Receptor alpha (LXRalpha), which contributes to its protective effects against acute lung injury and inflammatory disorders [PMID: 26455314]. In clinical contexts, it is often studied for its potential in treating chronic venous insufficiency and diabetic retinopathy. Because it is a small molecule compound rather than a protein receptor or enzyme, it is classified as a bioactive metabolite rather than a drug target.
