S-adenosylmethionine synthase isoform type-1 (MAT1A) is an enzyme that catalyzes the formation of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM or SAMe) from methionine and ATP. SAM is a crucial methyl donor involved in numerous methylation reactions throughout the body and plays a central role in cellular metabolism. MAT1A is highly expressed in the liver and plays a key role in hepatic metabolism and liver health. Deficiency or dysfunction can contribute to liver diseases such as cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma due to impaired methylation capacity. Therapeutically, exogenous SAMe has been used for its anti-inflammatory properties and potential benefits in chronic liver disease management.
SAMe acts as a methyl donor in various methylation reactions and participates in other metabolic pathways.
