Methionine Adenosyltransferase

Molecular classification
Enzyme

Overview

Methionine adenosyltransferase (MAT), also known as S-adenosylmethionine synthetase, is a key enzyme in cellular metabolism that catalyzes the synthesis of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM or AdoMet) from methionine and ATP. SAM is the principal biological methyl donor, essential for transmethylation reactions affecting DNA, proteins, lipids, and other small molecules. Dysregulation of MAT activity has been implicated in several diseases including liver disorders/injury and cancer progression/metastasis. Targeting specific MAT isoforms has become an area of interest for drug development against cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, depression, osteoarthritis, migraine, among others.
