Overview

S1 RNA-binding domain-containing protein 1 (SRBD1) is a highly conserved, essential protein that serves as a key component of the mitotic chromatid axis[1]. SRBD1 binds to DNA and is required for proper sister chromatid segregation during cell division, acting in prophase to safeguard the decatenation process and prevent missegregation of chromosomes[1]. It contains an S1 RNA-binding domain, a well-characterized motif also found in a variety of RNA-binding proteins, and may participate in mRNA translation or ribosome function, though its principal role appears related to genome stability in dividing cells[1][2][3][4]. Disease-association studies implicate SRBD1 in susceptibility to certain forms of glaucoma, but it is not currently a validated therapeutic target[4].
