Target intelligence / Profile preview
S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B) is a member of the S100 family of low molecular-weight, EF-hand calcium-binding proteins. It is primarily expressed in astrocytes within the central nervous system. The protein functions both intracellularly and extracellularly, playing roles in cellular regulation, signaling, and as a clinical biomarker. At elevated concentrations, extracellular S100B can act as a damage-associated molecular pattern molecule (DAMP). Regulation by melittin has been suggested for epilepsy treatment research purposes. Elevated serum or CSF levels are used clinically to indicate brain injury. It may also serve as an indicator for melanoma progression/metastasis.
