Sacral plexus

Molecular classification
Other (Peripheral nerve bundle / Plexus)
01

Overview

The sacral plexus is a network of nerves arising from the lumbosacral trunk (L4-L5) and sacral spinal nerves S1-S4. This plexus lies on the posterior pelvic wall and innervates the muscles and skin of the pelvis, posterior thigh, most of the lower leg and foot, and some pelvic organs. It plays essential roles in both sensory and motor control, as well as autonomic (parasympathetic) regulation of pelvic organs. This structure is not a molecular target but a collection of nerve fibers and roots; it is relevant for anatomical, surgical, and neuromodulation interventions but not for targeted drug therapy.

Other names
Sacral spinal nervesSacral nerves (S1-S5)Lumbosacral plexus (partly overlaps)Sacral nerve roots
02

Mechanism of action

Not applicable to molecular drugs; neuromodulation or nerve block procedures may use anesthetics or electrical stimulation

03

Biological functions

Motor innervation of the pelvis, posterior thigh, most lower leg, and footSensory innervation of pelvic structures, genitalia, and lower limbsAutonomic (parasympathetic) innervation to pelvic organs
04

Disease associations

Neuropathy (sacral plexopathy)Trauma and nerve compression syndromesCertain pelvic or lower limb pain syndromes
05

Safety considerations

Injury to the sacral plexus can result in loss of function and sensation in the pelvis and lower limbDirect clinical neuromodulation or nerve block can lead to neuropathy, infection, or unintended loss of function
06

Interacting drugs

None (there are no molecular drugs that target the "sacral nerve" or plexus directly; interventions are surgical/electrical, not molecular)
07

Biomarkers

None specific for "sacral nerve" function or intervention
