Salicyl-AMP ligase

Molecular classification
Enzyme, ANL superfamily of adenylating enzymes
01

Overview

Salicyl-AMP ligase, also known as MbtA, is an enzyme that plays a critical role in the biosynthesis of mycobactin, a siderophore essential for iron acquisition in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This enzyme catalyzes the first committed step in mycobactin biosynthesis, activating salicylic acid and transferring it to the aryl carrier protein MbtB. MbtA is considered an attractive target for novel antitubercular agents due to its essentiality in iron acquisition pathways unique to bacteria.
