Saliva Replacement

Saliva replacement, also known as artificial saliva or salivary substitutes, is a synthetically produced liquid or gel designed to mimic the natural secretion of human saliva. It is primarily used for symptomatic relief in individuals suffering from xerostomia (dry mouth) and hyposalivation (reduced saliva production) resulting from various causes such as medication use, cancer therapy, or autoimmune diseases. It moisturizes and lubricates the oral tissues, providing some protection against dental erosion and assisting with digestion. Common formulations include solutions, sprays, gels, and lozenges containing viscosity agents, minerals, buffering agents, and flavorings.
