Saliva secretion

01

Overview

Saliva secretion is a physiological process carried out by the major and minor salivary glands. It is regulated primarily by the autonomic nervous system, including cholinergic (muscarinic M1/M3) and adrenergic (alpha1, beta) receptor signaling in acinar and ductal epithelial cells. The process involves the initial secretion of an isotonic fluid by acinar cells, which is later modified by ductal cells to produce hypotonic saliva with electrolyte and protein content tailored to physiological needs. Disruption of this process can occur through diseases (e.g., Sjögren’s syndrome), medications (such as anticholinergics), radiation damage, or systemic conditions, resulting in decreased oral health and quality of life[1][3][5][7][9]. Because "saliva secretion" is not itself a distinct molecule, protein, or receptor, but reflects the action of several molecular targets, its use as a target name is incorrect for the purpose of structured drug target information. Relevant molecular targets involved in saliva secretion would include "Muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M3," "Alpha-1 adrenergic receptor," "Aquaporin-5," and various ion channels and transporters[1][3][7].
