Target intelligence / Profile preview
Salmonella species is the name of a genus of rod-shaped, Gram-negative bacteria belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae. This genus includes two main species, Salmonella enterica and Salmonella bongori; S. enterica alone encompasses thousands of serotypes, some of which are major human pathogens. Salmonella species are primarily intracellular pathogens and are distinguished by possessing O (somatic), H (flagellar), and in certain strains, Vi (capsular) antigens. These bacteria are motile, facultatively anaerobic, and capable of surviving in harsh environments. Salmonella infection is a leading cause of foodborne illness worldwide, resulting in diseases ranging from self-limited gastroenteritis to life-threatening systemic infections such as typhoid fever. As a therapeutic target, "Salmonella species" is too broad and not typically considered a direct drug target. Instead, drug discovery efforts focus on essential bacterial enzymes and proteins. The genus is an important focus of antimicrobial therapy, public health surveillance, and vaccine development, with major challenges arising from its antigenic variability, ability to form biofilms, and capacity for rapid acquisition of antibiotic resistance genes[1][3][5][7][8].
