Overview

Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped, facultative anaerobic bacterium belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family (Wikipedia, 2024). It is one of the primary serotypes of Salmonella enterica responsible for foodborne salmonellosis and human gastroenteritis worldwide (Cleveland Clinic, 2024). As a facultative intracellular pathogen, S. Enteritidis possesses the ability to invade host intestinal epithelial cells and survive within macrophages by utilizing specialized virulence factors, such as those encoded by Salmonella pathogenicity islands (Frontiers, 2024). Therapeutic management of severe or systemic infections involves the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, including fluoroquinolones, cephalosporins, and macrolides, which disrupt essential bacterial functions (Medscape, 2023). While these drugs target specific molecular components within the bacterium, Salmonella Enteritidis itself represents a whole pathogenic organism rather than a single molecular target or receptor. The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains remains a major public health concern and a significant hurdle for effective clinical treatment (PubMed, 2021).
