Overview

Salmonella enterica serotype Newport is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped, motile bacterium belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae[5][7]. It is a major serotype of *Salmonella enterica* subsp. *enterica*, and is among the most common causes of human non-typhoidal Salmonella infections worldwide[5][7][8]. S. Newport is capable of causing gastroenteritis, and in some cases, invasive extraintestinal disease such as septicemia, abscesses, meningitis, and osteomyelitis[5]. This serotype is of significant concern due to its frequent involvement in foodborne outbreaks linked to both animal-based and plant-based foods[7]. Both antimicrobial-sensitive and multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains of S. Newport circulate globally; MDR strains, especially those harboring the plasmid-encoded *blaCMY-2* gene (which confers resistance to third-generation cephalosporins like ceftriaxone), have become important public health threats due to reduced treatment options and increased risk of severe disease outcomes[1][2][5][9]. Most therapeutic failures and severe outcomes are associated with MDR strains. S. Newport is *not* a molecule, gene, protein, or individual receptor but a whole bacterial serovar. It is therefore not individually considered a molecular target, but its detection, antibiotic resistance profiles, and molecular markers are important in clinical and epidemiological settings[7][9].
