Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi antigen

Molecular classification
Polysaccharide, Lipopolysaccharide, Protein
01

Overview

Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi antigen refers primarily to the surface antigens present on the bacterium Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, which causes typhoid fever. The most clinically significant of these is the Vi (virulence) capsular polysaccharide antigen, but other important antigens include O (somatic) and H (flagellar) antigens. The Vi capsule acts as a major virulence factor by reducing inflammatory responses, inhibiting phagocytosis, and increasing resistance to oxidative killing. Detection of antibodies against these antigens is used for diagnosis, and purified Vi polysaccharide has been developed into an effective vaccine.
