Target intelligence / Profile preview

Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis O-antigen polysaccharide (O9)

Molecular classification
Polysaccharide, Lipopolysaccharide component, O-antigen
01

Overview

The O9 antigen polysaccharide is a key surface component of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) layer in Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis, a major cause of foodborne illness worldwide. The O-antigen is responsible for the serological specificity of this bacterium and plays an important role in immune recognition, virulence, and vaccine development. It consists of repeating oligosaccharide units (mannose, rhamnose, galactose, and tyvelose) forming the outermost part of LPS. It provides protection against host defenses, contributes to bacterial virulence, and is a prime target for diagnostic assays and vaccine development against non-typhoidal Salmonella infections.
