Overview

Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis polysaccharide antigen, specifically the O-antigen component of its lipopolysaccharide (LPS), is a primary surface structure and a major target for the host immune system. It belongs to the serogroup D1, characterized by a specific repeating oligosaccharide unit containing tyvelose, which defines its immunodominant O9 epitope. This antigen plays a critical role in the virulence of the bacteria by protecting it against complement-mediated lysis and aiding in environmental survival. In the context of drug and vaccine development, the O-antigen is the principal target for protective antibodies. Most current and experimental vaccines, including glycoconjugates, aim to elicit high titers of anti-O-antigen IgG to promote opsonophagocytosis and prevent infection. Because Salmonella Enteritidis is a leading cause of global foodborne gastroenteritis, this polysaccharide remains a high-priority target for public health interventions.
