Target intelligence / Profile preview
The capsule of *Salmonella enterica* serovar Typhi, also known as the Vi antigen, is a surface-exposed extracellular polysaccharide that is a critical virulence factor. It enables immune evasion by inhibiting complement activation and neutrophil phagocytosis, and modulates inflammation, facilitating systemic spread during typhoid fever. The Vi capsular polysaccharide is the basis for current typhoid vaccines.
Vaccines induce functional antibody responses that confer protection against typhoid fever by targeting the Vi antigen and promoting opsonization and clearance of S. Typhi.
