The Vi polysaccharide antigen is a capsular polysaccharide found on the surface of *Salmonella enterica* serovar Typhi (S. Typhi), the causative agent of typhoid fever in humans. This antigen is a key virulence factor and distinguishes S. Typhi (and some related serovars like Paratyphi C) from most other *Salmonella* strains, which do not express this capsule. It is composed primarily of α-1,4-linked N-acetylgalactosaminuronic acid residues. The Vi capsule inhibits phagocytosis by immune cells, reduces opsonization, dampens inflammatory responses, and increases infectivity. Purified Vi polysaccharide is used in effective vaccines against typhoid fever, inducing protective anti-Vi antibodies.
