Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium O-antigen polysaccharide (O4) is a specific structural component of the outer membrane lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. It is a key determinant in bacterial serotyping, immune recognition, and vaccine development. It consists of a repeating tetrasaccharide unit with a Man-Rha-Gal backbone and a unique dideoxyhexose sugar, abequose, which defines the O4 specificity. Antibodies targeting this epitope are crucial for protective immunity against infection.
