Overview

Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhi (commonly called Salmonella Typhi or S. Typhi) is a human-restricted, Gram-negative, flagellated, rod-shaped bacterium that causes typhoid fever, a potentially life-threatening systemic febrile illness. S. Typhi infects the intestinal tract and blood, typically spreading via the fecal-oral route in areas with inadequate sanitation. Its pathogenicity is linked to several virulence factors, including the Vi capsule antigen, type III secretion systems, and the formation of biofilms, all of which contribute to immune evasion, tissue invasion, and chronic carrier states. Treatment primarily involves antibiotics, but increasing antimicrobial resistance, especially in XDR strains, poses significant clinical challenges. S. Typhi is not itself a molecular therapeutic target but is a pathogenic organism against which drugs and vaccines are developed to prevent or treat infection[2][3][4][8].
