Target intelligence / Profile preview
Salmonella Newport siderophore receptor and porin (SRP) proteins are specialized outer membrane proteins essential for the survival and virulence of Salmonella bacteria [1, 3]. Siderophore receptors are high-affinity transporters that capture iron-siderophore complexes from the host environment, while porins are channel-forming proteins that facilitate the diffusion of small nutrients across the bacterial cell wall [4, 12]. Because iron is a critical limiting factor for bacterial growth within a host, these proteins are vital for the pathogen's metabolic processes [5, 12]. In veterinary medicine, these proteins are extracted and used as the primary antigens in subunit vaccines, such as the Salmonella Newport Bacterial Extract vaccine [7, 8]. Vaccination induces the production of antibodies that bind to these SRPs, effectively blocking nutrient uptake and starving the bacteria [1, 4]. This targeted approach not only reduces the clinical severity of salmonellosis but also significantly decreases the fecal shedding of the pathogen, thereby improving animal health and food safety [3, 10].
Induction of specific antibodies that bind to siderophore receptors and porins on the bacterial cell wall, blocking the transport of essential iron and nutrients, which leads to bacterial starvation and death [1, 4].
