Overview

The Vi polysaccharide antigen is a capsular polysaccharide produced by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi). It is a virulence factor that enables immune evasion and is a key component of typhoid fever vaccines. It is composed of repeating units of (1-4)-2-deoxy-2-N-acetyl galacturonic acid and is variably O-acetylated. Immunization with the Vi antigen induces a T-cell independent antibody response that confers protective immunity against typhoid fever.
