Overview

Salmonella Typhimurium surface antigens are major molecular components present on the surface of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium, a Gram-negative bacterium and important human pathogen[1][3][4][5][7][8][9][10]. These surface antigens include the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) O-antigen (a diverse polysaccharide chain), H-antigens (flagellar proteins), and various outer membrane proteins[3][4][5][8][10]. The O-antigen is a highly variable polysaccharide that determines the serotype, acts as a barrier to immune defenses, and serves as a critical target for vaccine development due to its strong immunogenicity[1][3][5][7][9][10]. H-antigens (flagellar proteins) and outer membrane proteins are also antigenic, supporting serotyping and immune recognition. These antigens play essential roles in virulence, immune evasion, colonization, and modulation of host immune responses. Their marked antigenic diversity presents challenges for vaccine and diagnostic design, making them a major focus in the fight against invasive Salmonella infections[5][9][10].
