Salmonid alphavirus subtype 3 is a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA virus belonging to the family Togaviridae and genus Alphavirus[3][7]. It is one of six genetic subtypes of salmonid alphavirus and is the causative agent of pancreas disease (PD) in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), predominantly in Norway[1][2][3][4][5][7]. The viral genome encodes eight proteins, including structural glycoproteins (E1, E2, E3, 6K) and nonstructural proteins (nsP1–4)[3][7]. Infection with SAV3 leads to pancreas disease, which can cause significant morbidity and mortality in aquaculture, resulting in major economic losses[1][2][4][7]. Vaccines based on inactivated virus are commercially available and are the primary method of disease control in aquaculture[3]. SAV3 is classified as a viral pathogen, not a classical therapeutic target (such as receptor, enzyme, etc.), and should not be treated as a molecular target for pharmacological modulation in the classical sense, but as a pathogen for prophylactic vaccine development[3][7].
