Salsola kali pollen allergens refer to a group of proteins derived from the pollen of the Russian thistle (Salsola kali), a dominant weed in arid and semi-arid regions known for forming tumbleweeds. The most significant of these is the major allergen Sal k 1, a pectin methylesterase that serves as the primary marker for genuine sensitization to this species. Other components include profilins (Sal k 4) and polygalacturonases (Sal k 6), which are involved in plant cell wall metabolism and cytoskeletal maintenance. In sensitized individuals, these proteins trigger Type I hypersensitivity reactions, leading to clinical conditions such as seasonal allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma. In the pharmaceutical industry, these allergens are the primary targets for allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT), where they are administered in controlled doses to induce immunological tolerance. This therapeutic approach aims to shift the immune response from an IgE-mediated allergic profile toward a protective IgG-mediated profile, specifically increasing levels of allergen-specific IgG4. While highly effective for long-term desensitization, the administration of these allergens carries a risk of systemic adverse effects, including anaphylaxis, requiring careful clinical monitoring during the build-up and maintenance phases of therapy.
