SAP30BP antisense RNA 1 (SAP30BP-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) that is transcribed antisense to the SAP30BP gene. Like other antisense RNAs, SAP30BP-AS1 may regulate the expression of its sense counterpart or other genes through mechanisms such as transcriptional interference, modulation of chromatin structure, or altering mRNA stability. Antisense RNAs generally act via cis or trans regulatory mechanisms, impacting gene expression during replication, transcription, or translation. SAP30BP-AS1 should not be confused with SAP30BP (the protein-coding gene), which plays a direct role in pre-mRNA splicing, nuclear speckle morphology, and protein complex formation, but SAP30BP-AS1 itself encodes no protein and is not considered a direct therapeutic target.
