Sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA) is a P-type ATPase enzyme located in the membrane of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) within muscle cells. Its primary function is to transport calcium ions (Ca2+) from the cytosol into the SR lumen, utilizing energy derived from ATP hydrolysis. This process is essential for muscle relaxation following contraction by reducing cytosolic Ca2+ concentration. SERCA activity is crucial for excitation-contraction coupling in cardiac muscle and is regulated by proteins like phospholamban and sarcolipin. Dysfunction of SERCA, particularly SERCA2a, is implicated in heart failure.
