Sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase isoform 2a (SERCA2a) is an enzyme encoded by the ATP2A2 gene. It is a magnesium-dependent transmembrane pump responsible for hydrolyzing ATP to actively transport Ca²⁺ ions from the cytosol into the lumen of the sarcoplasmic reticulum in cardiac muscle cells. This process is essential for lowering cytosolic Ca²⁺ during muscle relaxation, refilling SR stores for subsequent contractions, and maintaining proper myocardial function. The activity of SERCA2a is tightly regulated by proteins such as phospholamban and sarcolipin. Decreased expression or dysfunction of SERCA2a impairs cardiac performance and contributes significantly to pathologies such as heart failure[1][3].
