Sarcoplasmic Reticulum Calcium Release (SR Calcium Release)

Overview

Sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) calcium release is the process by which calcium ions (Ca2+) are released from the sarcoplasmic reticulum, a specialized organelle in muscle cells. This release is crucial for initiating muscle contraction in skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle. The SR acts as an intracellular store of Ca2+, and upon stimulation, Ca2+ is rapidly released into the cytoplasm through ryanodine receptors (RyRs). After contraction, Ca2+ is actively pumped back into the SR by SERCA pumps, allowing relaxation. Dysregulation of SR calcium release can lead to various diseases, including heart failure, malignant hyperthermia, and Brody disease.
