This process is essential for muscle relaxation following contraction and is a key regulator of intracellular calcium homeostasis. The primary driver is the SERCA pump, which uses ATP hydrolysis to translocate Ca2+ into the SR lumen. Calsequestrin buffers Ca2+ within the SR. Regulation involves proteins like phospholamban and sarcolipin, which modulate SERCA activity. Dysfunctional regulation at any step can have profound effects on overall cardiovascular health.
