Sarcoptes scabiei

Molecular classification
Ectoparasitic arthropod (mite)
01

Overview

Sarcoptes scabiei is an ectoparasitic mite that causes scabies in humans. It burrows into the stratum corneum of the skin, feeds on tissue fluids, lays eggs, and produces fecal pellets. The host's immune response to mite antigens causes intense itching, rash, and characteristic burrows. Treatment involves topical acaricides or oral ivermectin to kill the mites and their eggs.
