SARS Coronavirus 2 Membrane Protein (M protein)

Target
M protein
Molecular classification
Viral Structural Protein, Integral membrane protein
01

Overview

The membrane (M) protein of SARS-CoV-2 is the most abundant structural protein in the coronavirus virion. It plays a central role in virus assembly, morphogenesis, and budding by organizing other structural proteins—spike (S), envelope (E), and nucleocapsid (N)—through direct physical interactions. The M protein is also a key target for host immune responses and has been considered as a potential target for vaccines and therapeutics.
