Target intelligence / Profile preview
The nucleocapsid (N) protein is one of the four main structural proteins encoded by the SARS-CoV-2 genome. It is a highly conserved, multifunctional protein essential for viral replication and assembly. It binds to viral genomic RNA, compacting it into ribonucleoprotein complexes that fit inside virions and interacts with S, E, M proteins on the envelope to facilitate assembly of new virus particles. It is also involved in regulation of transcription and synthesis of viral RNAs during infection cycles. It is a major antigenic target for diagnostic tests and a promising drug target.
